Dokra/Dhokra Art: Method of Baking Clay Molds and Melting Metal in a Traditional Furnace

This photo depicts an important process of the traditional Dokra/Dhokra art of Jharkhand. In it, the prepared clay molds are being baked in a traditional furnace. Meanwhile, the metal is also melted in the intense heat of the furnace. The heat of the furnace causes the wax inside the mold to melt and flow out, creating an empty cavity inside. After this, the molten metal is carefully poured into these clay molds. The metal takes the exact shape inside the mold, and upon cooling, a beautiful metal object of Dokra/Dhokra art is ready. This process is an excellent example of traditional knowledge, skill, and patience.
