Clay Molds Drying in the Sun for the Lost Wax Technique

This photo depicts an important stage in the creation process of Dhokra art. All the objects seen in the photo are clay molds, into which molten metal is later poured. Currently, these molds are being dried in the sun. A layer of wax is applied inside them, which is a part of the traditional lost wax technique of Dhokra art. After this, these molds are heated in a furnace, causing the wax inside to melt and flow out, creating an empty cavity in its place. Then, molten metal is poured into that same space to create beautiful metal objects of Dhokra art. This process reflects the unique identity of the traditional craftsmanship of Jharkhand.
