Course Overview

Moonj artefact craft is a traditional weaving practice of the Tharu Tribe living in the Terai belt of Bihar. The craft uses moonj grass, a durable natural fibre found in wetlands and grasslands, to create baskets, containers, mats, and other household artefacts. Traditionally practiced by rural artisans, the craft reflects the Tharu community’s close relationship with nature, sustainable resource use, and cultural traditions. The knowledge of fibre preparation, weaving, and pattern creation is passed through generations and remains an important part of the community’s livelihood and material culture.
