Bhil Tribe Women Serving Traditional Meal of Makki Roti and Gheriya Bhaji
thumbnail

This image from Sagwara village in Dungarpur district of Rajasthan presents a warm and intimate view of a traditional Bhil household kitchen, where two women are sitting on the floor preparing and serving a meal of makki roti and gheriya bhaji. One woman is stirring the gheriya in an earthen pot placed on a traditional chulha, while the other assists in preparing the meal.

A basket filled with freshly made makki rotis forms the staple of this meal. These thick rotis are shaped by hand and roasted over an open flame, giving them a distinct earthy flavor. Alongside, a spicy garlic chutney is prepared by grinding red chilies, garlic, and salt on a stone slab, adding a sharp and flavorful element to the meal.

Gheriya bhaji, made from maize grits and green leafy vegetables, is a semi-liquid preparation often eaten by dipping the roti into it. Cooked slowly in an earthen pot, it retains its natural taste and nutritional value. The scene reflects not just food preparation but also the communal lifestyle, traditional food practices, and the simplicity of life deeply connected with nature in the Bhil community.
